ACC Football Live: Duke Blue Devils vs. Virginia Cavaliers

The Duke Blue Devils (4-1, 1-0) host the Virginia Cavaliers (2-3, 0-1) for the 64th meeting between the two teams at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, N.C.

The Cavaliers lead the series 33-30 which dates back to the two schools' first-ever meeting in 1890.

1st Quarter:

  • Duke kickoff and Virginia returns it for 13 yards
  • Cavaliers steadily moving the ball up the field after three plays - starting close to 50-yard line
  • QB Phillip Sims steadily moving chains for UVA into red zone
  • After eight plays and 83 yards the Cavaliers score first
  • 7-0 Cavaliers lead over Blue Devils w/ 11:44 to go
  • Duke's sophomore quarterback Anthony Boone makes his first career start in place of the injured senior Sean Renfree and rushes for a quick 14 yards on the first play
  • Just two snaps later, Boone launches a 54-yard pass to Jamison Crowder who takes it to the house for a touch down
  • PAT is good and just three plays for 75 yards in 54 seconds and the score is tied 7-7
  • UVA gets one down in before Sims throws an interception with Duke's Tony Foster recording his first career interception
  • Duke's Connor Vernon makes his first reception of the game and becomes the ACC's all-time leader in receptions and keeps his current NCAA receptions record
  • Boone gets the ball off the snap and puts another one in the air for 37 yards which Vernon jumps to catch and score the touchdown at 8:09
  • Martin converts the PAT and the Blue Devils efficiently score again - 2 plays, 40 yards and 1:22 time of possession
  • Duke leads 14-7 with 8:09 to go
  • Virginia gets the ball back and works to move the ball on the ground - still moving the chains
  • 12 plays has netted the Cavaliers 70 yards so far and are threatening to enter the red zone
  •  After using up 7:24 of game time, Virginia ties the score 14-14 after a 15-play drive of 84 yards that gives Duke the ball back with 40 seconds to go
  • End of the quarter, score is still tied 14-14 - Duke starts on their 24-yard line
2nd quarter:

  • Blue Devils can't generate anything and are forced to punt
  • Cavaliers start with the ball on their own 31-yard line
  • Sims continues to move the offense on the ground but can't find anything in the air - starts third and 14 to go and attempts a long pass downfield that is incomplete
  • Duke gets the ball back with Vernon calling the fair catch on the punt return - ball bounces into the end zone and the Blue Devils will start on their own 20-yard line
  • Boone throws a few short passes to Conner Vernon to gain short yardage
  • A few incomplete passes, including an unsuccessful interception attempt by the Cavaliers, and Blue Devils are forced to punt after nine plays with only 9 yards gained
  • Virginia starts with the ball on their own 12-yard line
  • The Blue Devils defense continues to contain the Cavaliers running game - forcing Virginia to punt after an anemic four-play sequence that ate up almost two minutes of game time for only four yards gained
  • Still tied 14-14 with 7:35 to go
  • The Cavaliers try to air one out but are unsuccessful but gain 19 yards in two plays on the ground and cross into Blue Devils' half of the field
  • Virginia can't gain much more ground and are forced to punt the ball away
  • Duke ball on its own 13-yard line with 4:44 to play
  • Boone completes passes to Vernon, Desmond Scott, and Isaac Blakeney on three straight downs
  • The Blue Devils continue to move the ball upfield to their own 45-yard line
  • After a valiant 10-play and 35 yard drive, Duke is forced to punt the ball with 2:22 remaining
  • Virginia rushes and then tries to complete a long pass unsuccessfully and try to convert on third down - come up short
  • Vernon signals fair catch as Virginia punts it 36 yards - Duke starts with ball on its own 24-yard line
  • Boone complete a pass to Blakeney - looking to gain big yards but throws one past Scott by the Cavaliers sideline
  • On third and five yard to go, Boone forced to toss a swing pass that denies the Blue Devils from gaining a first down 
  • Duke punts the ball back to Virginia with 36 seconds left to play - a deep 55-yard punt by Will Monday puts the Cavaliers deep in their half of the field
  • Virginia starts with 26 seconds left and gains 30 yards on a rushing play by Kevin Parks
  • With a three-receiver set, Sims makes a 28-yard pass completion and the Cavaliers are threatening to  score with eight seconds remaining
  • A quick pass and the Cavaliers attempt a field goal
  • It's good and the Cavaliers take the lead after a four-play 62-yard drive in 26 seconds to take the lead at the half

End of 1st half: Virgina 17, Duke 14

3rd Quarter:

  • Duke starts with the ball after a touchback on the kickoff
  • After three quick rushing plays and a few short passes the Blue Devils can't generate enough to continue upfield and are forced to punt quickly after a drive that lasts just over two minutes
  • Virginia starts deep in its end and almost lose it on a fumble, but still keep possession
  • The Duke defense continues to stifle the Virginia offense and force a punt
  • Vernon takes the punt return back for 31 yards and puts the Blue Devils in the red zone - 0-0 so far in the game
  • Boone takes the snap and lofts a swing pass to Juwan Thompson who runs it into the endzone for the touchdown - PAT is good
  • Duke leads 21-17 with 11:46 to play
  • Virginia starts its drive with a rushing paly - a strategy that worked during the first half - gained 184 yards on 26 carries
  • Duke defense is keeping busy as a result
  • Virgina works the ball towards midfield and goes for it on fourth and one yard to go
  • Duke's Walt Canty comes up with a tremendous tackle to deny the attempted first down conversion
  • The Blue Devils start with the ball on the Virginia 46-yard line and work the ball down to the 15-yard line after a defensive pass interference call
  • Duke threatening to score again in the red zone
  • With momentum on its side, the Blue Devils score again as Jela Duncan runs it in for 11 yards and extends the Duke lead
  • Blue Devils lead Cavaliers 28-17 with 7:30 remaining - last drive consisted of four plays for 45 yards in 1:33 time of possession
  •  Sims having difficulty in advancing the Cavaliers offense as the Duke defense forces Virginia to punt again
  • Duke starts with the ball on its own 37-yard line and Boone passes to Blakeney while Snead gains yards on the next play
  • Versatile Brandon Connette comes in for Duke and ends up catching and bobbling the ball - catch or not - play under review
  • Incomplete pass call results in Duke punting the ball away with 5:11 to go
  • Cavaliers rush the ball twice before Sims finds Jones who runs 38 yards for the first down in Duke's half of the field
  • Sims constantly looking for receivers downfield as the Cavaliers threaten to score - field goal unit comes in with 2:12 remaining
  • Virginia field goal attempt is no good
  • Duke still leading 28-17 and gets the ball back its own 28-yard line
  • After a loss for a yard, Boone completes a 14-yard pass as the Cavaliers defense blitzes on the play
  • With time running down in the quarter, Blue Devils march into Virginia's half of the field and will start the final quarter on the 47-yard line
 4th Quarter:

  •  After a slow start on the drive, Anthony Boone puts up a 45-yard pass that Vernon catches in the end zone with double coverage on him
  • Duke completes a seven-play 72-yard drive to extend its lead to 35-17 with 14:12 to play
  • On cue, Blue Devils defense tightens up as Walt Canty cuts a Cavaliers rush short
  • Ross Cockrell then picks off a lofted pass attempt from Sims - his fourth of the season
  • Duke starts the drive on the ground and continues to eat up valuable game time as both Boone and Connette take snaps
  • However, no real gain on the drive forces Will Monday to put up another long punt and the special teams unit keeps the Cavaliers pinned inside its 40-yard line.
  • Virginia has work to do and gets to it right away with a quick 25-yard completion followed up by another 25-yard gain
  • A third pass attempt on the no-huddle offense is halted with an incomplete pass followed by another
  • Cavaliers threatening to score on the Duke 25-yard line with a field goal attempt
  • Another one goes by the wayside for Virginia as they can't get closer to the Blue Devils on the scoreboard
  • Duke starts with the ball back on its own 28-yard line with just under nine minutes to play
  • A three-and-done series forces the Blue Devils to punt and the back-and-forth possession game continues - UVA ball on its own 38-yard line
  • The Blue Devils defense turning up the intensity as the Cavaliers' Sims is getting bumped and bruised on two consecutive plays and forcing the punt unit to come onto the field
  • Duke gets the ball back on its own 30-yard line with 6:13 to play
  • Blue Devils eating up valuable clock time as they advance the ball 18 yards on three plays - under four minutes to play in the game
  • Monday punts it deep into Virginia end but there are flags on the play - calls go against the Cavaliers - Duke keeps the ball
  • The Blue Devils continue to rush the ball as the clock counts down to three minutes remaining
  • All of a sudden Thompson takes a handoff from Boone and runs it 35 yards into the end zone for the touchdown
  • Duke leads 42-17 with 2:45 remaining
  • Virginia brings in its junior quarterback, Mike Rocco, as Sims was injured on previous Cavaliers series of downs
  • Blue Devils defense continues to clamp down as the clock slips under two minutes remaining
  • Duke gets ball back and runs clock down slowly and painfully as UVA looks on
