In the second game of the day during first-round play at the 2012 NCAA Women's Basketball Championship Tournament in Chapel Hill, N.C., ACC tournament finalist and #4 seed, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will face the #14 Sacred Heart Pioneers.

1st half:

  •  Georgia Tech wins the tip as Sasha Goodlett gets up there first
  • After first 90 seconds of play, the Yellow Jackets lead 3-2
  • The Pioneers add another basket and lead  4-3 before Goodlett scores a layup and gets the foul - leading 5-4 with 16:14 left
  • Yellow Jackets applying their zone defense early to test the Pioneers' perimeter shooting - it's working so far until Ericka Norman drops one to tie the score 7-7
  • Pioneers score an uncontested layup to take their first lead of the game - 9-7 with 13:55 to play
  • Both teams continue to miss easy shots battling in the paint and trying to get a fell for each others' game
  • Sacred Heart moving the ball at mid-court as theYellow Jackets try to trap - the Pioneers can't hit from three while Georgia Tech working to get its early baskets inside as Chelsea Regins tries to score a layup and gets a FT - she misses it
  • Pioneers drive the hoop but take the offensive charge and the Yellow Jackets come the other way and score twice - Georgia Tech now lead 13-9 with 11:14 to play
  • After the TO, the Yellow Jackets' Sydney Wallace hits a big three-pointer and extends the lead to 16-9
  • Goodlett gets a pass inside and an easy layup over everyone
  • Sacred Heart still scrapping but the GT defense is starting to show its effectiveness - Yellow Jackets lead 18-10 with 9:15 remaining
  • Wallace hits another two-pointer  and the Pioneers are trying to get the ball inside against a long GT squad - Callan Taylor hits a three to break the Pioneers' recent drought - Yellow Jackets lead 22-12 with 7:21 to play
  • Yellow Jackets defense continues to stymie Sacred Heart but it is still within reach as GT lead is 24-12
  • Georgia Tech forcing the Pioneers to pick up the offensive pace of ball movement and creating turnovers from it - GT moving the ball well in transition and Metra Walthour hits her first FG and three-pointer of the game - extends lead to 29-12 with 5:44 to go
  • Pioneers offense stuck at 12 since around the 10 minute mark - long drought as Wallace hits another three-pointer for GT - lead now is twenty - 32-12 
  • GT causes a Pioneers turnover and inbounding with little opposition from Sacred Heart who is showing some fatigue already
  • However Gabrielle Washington drops a three-pointer for the Pioneers - ending the drought
  • Wallace drops another three-pointer from the right side - Goodlett sitting for GT with Regins and D. Hamilton-Carter are getting PT - depth in the post that the Pioneers are still struggling with
  • Georgia Tech with a double-up score - 36-18 as the first half is coming to a close
  • Sacred Heart manages to get a FT with 37 seconds left - 36-19 in GT's favor
  • GT turns it over on their possession and the Pioneers score to reduce their deficit to 15 points at the half

Interesting notes at the half:

Georgia Tech: shooting 13-26 (50%) - leading scorer - Sydney Wallace - 13 points

Sacred Heart: shooting 8-24 (33.3 %) - leading scorer - Gabrielle Washington - 8 points


2nd half:

  • Sacred Heart puts the first points of the half on the board - a long two-pointer by Taylor - Yellow Jackets up by 16 points after the first 90 seconds of play
  • The Yellow Jackets not laying off on the mid-court trap and playing like its a one-point game - extending the lead to 20
  • Pioneers have missed on five straight possession since Taylor scored
  • The Yellow Jackets starting to experience some shooting problems turning the ball over and putting the Pioneers on offense 
  • Yellow Jackets get a good set offense and score with Goodlett on the inside and then create SHU turnover as Dawm Maye gets an easy layup - Yellow Jackets lead 47-25 with 14:15 left in the half
  • Big press by Georgia Tech which the Pioneers break to get up the court but can't finish on three different shot attempts and rebounds before the Yellow Jackets bring it down
  • Wallacee comes off he wing and with two defenders in front of her drops a jumper - GT now leads 49-27 
  • Sacred Heart scores a layup and then Wallace drops a three-point shot which is then matched by Sacred Heart's Kiley Evans three-pointer - Yellow Jackets lead 52-31 with 11:49 to play
  • Pioneers working hard but Yellow Jackets force another turnover at half-court and Wallace nails another three-pointer - lead extends to 62-33 with 9:20 to go
  • Sacred Heart is staring to make some shots on their last two possession but the Yellow Jackets score some as well - 66-39 Yellow Jackets with 7:53 to play
  • Sacred Heart's Blair Koniszewski drops a two-pointer and worked hard for it
  • GT's Bennett matches it with two FT's 
  • Georgia Tech eating up time on the shot clock working the ball around and then inside to Tjasa Gortnar who is fouled - she hits them both - Yellow Jackets now lead 71-41 with 5:41 to go
  • Koniszewski hits a great three-pointer form the far wing and then SHU steals the ball and Ericka Norman scores na uncontested layup - 5-0 run for SHU there
  • Morgan Merriman drops a hook shot inside and the Pioneers' 7-0 has them trailing 71-48 with 4:18 to play
  • Sacred Heart turns it over on their possession after the media timeout but GT doesn't capitalize on it - SHU ball again
  • Tight single-coverage D applied by by the Yellow Jackets to keep them moving and eating up more game time
  • Yellow Jackets working the ball around on offense but not rushing the shot and then Wallace hits another three-pointer - GT leads 74-48 with 1:43 to play
  • The Yellow Jackets makes substitutions to work in the rest of the bench on the floor - still applying tight single-coverage and then score a layup which the Pioneers match - 76-50 with 30 seconds to play
  • As time is running down, final substitutions for the Pioneers
  • As the clock winds down the Pioneers take one last shot, but miss

As first-round games tip off at Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill, N.C. on Sunday, the #5 Georgetown Hoyas (22-8) meet the #12 Fresno State Bulldogs (28-50 in the first of two games on the day.

The Bulldogs have traveled across the country and carry the Western Athletic Conference title with them as they take on the Big East's Hoyas.

The Bulldogs hold the edge in the two teams' all-time record of play against one another - 1-0.

The only other time that both teams met was back in November, 1999 when the Bulldogs pulled off a 57-56 win over the Hoyas.

It's been a long time for these two teams to get reacquainted, so it should be a good one.

Tip-off in 40 minutes

1st half:

  • Hoyas put up the first three-points
  • Fresno State ties it up 3-3 and we're still in the first minute
  • Fast-paced start to this one
  • Tia Magee with a layup for the Hoyas
  • Rubylee Wright adds another two and the Hoyas lead 7-3 with 17:13 to play
  • Hoyas get the lead up to 12-3 but the Bulldogs take a timeout
  • Bulldogs posting a comeback with a 7-0 run and the score is 12-10 for Georgetown with 13 minutes to go
  • Hoyas still holding onto the lead 17-13 with 11:26 to play
  • Georgetown's zone defense has been keeping Fresno State on the outside looking in all game so far -  trying to penetra
  • the Bulldogs still scrapping and hanging in with Georgetown, trailing by six - 21-15 with 9:02 to play
  • Georgetown continues to work in the paint to add to its lead - Adria Crawford and Sydney Wilson working hard in there - Hoyas lead 23-17 with 7:50 to go
  • Bulldogs scoring on quick transition passes upcourt and staying close - Rosie Moult leading Bulldogs with 8 points so far
  • Hoyas missing shots and allowing Bulldogs to get closer - 23-19 with 6:40 to go
  • Georgetown continuing to keep the lead with intermittent buckets but still missing easy ones  which the Bulldogs are matching and still trailing 28-19 with 3:37 left in the half
  • Ki-Ki Moore helping out with the Bulldogs offense and fighting to get some points in the paint - has five now to help out Moult
  • Georgetown gets a few more from the FT line form Magee and Georgetown leading 30-21 with 1:05 to play 
  • Both teams struggling to put points up beyond the arc, so it is becoming a battle under the basket on every possession
  •  Sugar Rodgers finally hits a three for the Hoyas and Moore scores a layup for the Bulldogs - Hoyas leading at the half by 10 points

2nd half:

  • Georgetown start the half with possession and scores an easy layup
  • Fresno State works the ball around and is still having trouble hitting the three-point shot unill Moore hits one
  • The Hoyas' Crawford hits a jumper as the shot clock expires
  • The Bulldogs come back as Moult misses a three, but a putback keeps them on the board
  • Georgetown comes back with another layup - leading 39-28 with 17:51 to play
  • The Bulldogs' shooting trouble continue and the Hoyas take advantage of it as Rodgers follows up on  a layup miss by Crawford
  • Hoyas go on a five point run before the Bulldogs' Moore scores an easy layup - Hoyas lead 46-31 with 16:34 to play
  • Moult hits two straight three-pointer for Fresno State - trailing the Hoyas 48-37 with 13:38 to play
  • Fresno State keeps possession for the entire shot clock duration, but is still having trouble penetration the Georgetown zone defense
  • The Hoyas having easier time but miss and easy basket - still leading 49-37 with 12:28 to play
  • Georgetown guard Wright splits between the Bulldogs' Moult and Blakely Goldberg and blows by for the layup but just misses - big size difference there but the Wright's speed is fast off the dribble
  • The Blulldogs seem to be slowing down as the they are sluggish in getting back while the Hoyas maintain a quick transition speed - leading 51-40 with under ten minutes to play
  • Moore finally connects on an important three-point play, but the Hoyas come back with Rodgers scoring a transition rebound on here missed layup - 10 point lead, 53-43, for he Hoyas with 8:07 to play 
  • Bulldogs get a few from the FT line and the hoyas miss an easy layup
  • Moult misses a three but Fresno State rebounds and keeps possession
  • Taylor Thompson scores for Fresno State but Samisha Powell drops a three-pointer - Hoyas still lead but by seven, 56-49 with 6:07 to play
  • Hoyas are nto playing disciplined defense and taking cosly fouls
  • Bulldogs inching back while the the Hoyas miss shots - 56-53 Hoyas lead in this one - Georgetown going to the FT line
  • Georgetown drops one of two from the FT and have a 57-53 lead with 4:42 to play
  • Fresno has never led in this game while the Hoyas have led by as many as 17
  • The Bulldogs keep possession but can't get a shot off by the shot clock buzzer - still trailing by four with 3:31 to play
  • The Bulldogs get another point from the FT line - the Hoyas have been slowly allowing them to get back in it
  • Hoyas continue to struggle from the field and the Bulldogs bring it up trailing by three with 2:15 to play - big offensive foul call against the Bulldogs there though - Hoyas ball now
  • Both teams applying mid-court trap and Magee misses an uncontested layup and the Bulldogs have possession - trailing 57-54 with 1:40 to play
  • Big turnover after a TO and the Hoyas have the ball and the game in their hands on this possession - Bulldogs foul and Hoyas keep possession
  • Magee drives to the basket and she's fouled - shooting two - and she hits both to extend the lead to five points
  • Bulldogs working the ball on the perimeter and try to work it inside and the Hoyas' Rodger's steals it and is fouled
  • Rodgers misses the shot and the Bulldogs drive the hoop - Madison Parrish is fouled - shooting two - and she makes both - Hoyas lead 59-56 with 443.2 seconds to play
  • Rodgers fouled going the other way looking to make it a two possession game
  • she misses it and the Bulldogs have possession and throw it away - 17.9 seconds left
  • Hoyas inbound and the Bulldogs foul - trailing by three still with 16.5 seconds remaining
  • Williams scores one of two for Georgetown as Fresno State brings ball up and take TO with  12.2 seconds remaining - trail the Hoyas 60-56
  • Bulldogs look for Moult - miss on the three - rebound by Moore - miss on the jumper - Georgetown ball with 4.1 seconds to go
  • Hoyas inbounds a long ball down the court that Rodgers chases down and is fouled - misses her first FT, makes the second - extends the lead to 61-56
  • On the final inbounds, Bulldogs guard Thompson brings it up and launches one in vein
