2012 NCAA Tournament In-Game: #4 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets vs #5 Georgetown Hoyas

2012 NCAA Tournament: Yellow Jackets beat Hoyas 76-64, advance to Sweet 16

 
The #4 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (26-8) stung the #5 Georgetown Hoyas (23-9) by beating them 76 - 64 during second-round play in the Des Moines Regional section of the 2012 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament..

The two highest seeds competing in Chapel Hill, N.C. from the Des Moines Regional section of the 2012 NCAA Women's Basketball Championship Tournament will tip-off on Tuesday night.

The #4 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (25-8) face the #5 Georgetown Hoyas (23-8) at historic Carmichael Arena on the UNC campus as both teams vie for a spot in this year's Sweet 16 round of play next weekend.


Georgetown earned its points in the paint against Fresno State - Cheryl Treworgy - PrettySporty.com

The Yellow Jackets earned their spot in the second round after defeating the Sacred Heart Pioneers 76-50 while the Hoyas had to hold off the Fresno State Bulldogs 61-56 to do the same.

Both teams played each other one other time, a match-up that the Hoyas won 67-58 in a holiday tournament in the Virgin Islands in November 2010.

This one will be a good one and should go to the final buzzer.

Tip-off is set for 7:15 p.m.

Minutes before tip-off - Georgia Tech vs Georgetown - Peter Koutroumpis, PKS Consulting

1st half:

Starters:

Georgia Tech: Maye, Walthour, Marshall, Gortnar, Goodlett

Georgetown: Magee, Wright, Crawford, Wilson, Rodgers


  • Georgia Tech starts it off with a bank shot from Tyaunna Marshal and the Hoyas answer back with two from Tia Magee
  • Tech misses on their possession but Georgetown's Adria Crawford gets a layup inside - 4-2 Hoyas lead with 18:15 left
  • Yellow Jackets starting with full court and mid-court press to slow Hoyas offensive tempo and ball movement - they know it's coming
  • Big battle in the paint to look for tonight b/w Georgia Tech's Sasha Goodlett and Georgetown's Sydney Wilson
  • Teams still trying to get their bearings at both ends of the court
  • Yellow Jackets have missed on three straight possessions and Hoyas Rubylee Wright hits a three to extend the lead to 7-4 
  • Goodlett scores two and Magee answers with two and that is matched by Walthour - Georgetown leads 9-8 with 16:01 to go
  • Chess match is underway  and will continue
  • Both teams get a few baskets on FT and from the field as the Yellow Jackets take the lead 11:10 
  • Sydney Wallace adds to the lead and it's 13-10 with under 14 minutes to go
  • The Hoyas have gone with a smaller inside presence as Wilson is no longer in the game which will be interesting to see how they defend GT's Goodlett inside
  • Chelsea Regins gets a nice pass for a layup and the Rodgers gets and offensive rebound for a layup - 15-12 Yellow Jackets lead with 12 minutes to play
  • Georgetown rebounds and works hard under the basket to get a put-back - trail Georgia Tech by one - 15-14 with 11:36 to play in the half
  • Wilson back in for Georgetown
  • Metra Walthour hits a three-pointer for the Yellow Jackets after the Hoyas score - GT leads 18-16 with 10:16 to go in the half
  • Georgetown playing a zone defense that the yellow Jackets penetrate as Wallace hits a jumper to extend the lead to four points
  • Goodleet with only two points but is doing her job on the defense and moving the ball on the offense
  • Wright hits her second three-pointer of the game to bring the Hoyas closer - 20-19 for the Yellow Jackets
  • Coach Joseph employing her many and frequent player substitutions
  • Wright finds Amanda Reese inside for an easy layup and the Hoyas take the lead 21-20 with 6:54 to go
  • Goodlett scores two and the lead changes hands but not for long as the Hoyas get it back
  • Goodlett with another layup and Georgia Tech leads 24-23 with five minutes to play
  • Wallace drops a three-pointer and extends the lead to four points
  • Expecting this game to get a little more physical in the paint and it is as official is talking to Georgetown players
  • Goodlett keeps her offense rolling with another basket while the Hoyas miss an open jumper - Yellow Jackets lead is 29-23 with 3:38 to play
  • Mo Bennett gets two on the sheet for the Yellow Jackets and the Hoya's Wilson responds with a nice jumper from the FT line - GT leading 313-25 with 2:19 to go
  • Rodgers drives the lane and dishes to Wilson for two as the Hoyas narrow the deficit but Walthour drops a three for the Jackets
  • Hoyas come down but can't covert and Wallace comes back with another two to extend the Georgia Tech lead to 10 points - largest of the game so far - 37-27 with 59 seconds to play 
  • Hoyas move the ball in and out with Rodgers and Wilson working together - Rodgers hits the two
  • Georgia Tech can't convert and Wright drives the lane, stops, and goes up for the layup - it's good and she's fouled - going to the lane for fifth straight Hoyas point with 9.2 seconds left
  • Wright at the line but misses and Goodlett snags the rebound and is fouled - GT ball with 7.8 seconds 
  • Yellow Jackets turn it over on a travle call and Hoyas look for another score but after three attempts can't get anymore points back and trail the Yellow Jackets by six points as the buzzer sounds
Halftime score: Georgia Tech 37, Georgetown 31

Interesting notes at the half:

Georgia Tech: shooting 16-29 (55.2%) - leading scorer - Sydney Wallace - 14 points

Georgetown: shooting 14-36 (38.9%) - leading scorer - Rubylee Wright - 8 points
2nd half:

  • The Hoyas start with possession but can't convert and he Yellow Jackets don't either
  • Regins finally hits a jumper to extend the Yellow Jacket's lead to 39-31
  • Walthour steals the ball and goes up for the layup and is fouled hard and will shoot for two - she drops both - Georgia Tech leads 41-31 with 18:08 to go
  • Reese is fouled on the ensuing Hoyas possession and scores both
  • Action in the paint is starting to heat up as Regins gets a layup and the foul - she scores on the FT and Hoyas try to push the pace on offense
  • Tight GT defense almost creates a turnover and GT has the ball
  • After no production on the offense for the Yellow Jackets, Georgetown comes down and Wright finds Magee for the layup - GT leads 44-35
  • Wallace hits her third three-pointer of the game and Georgia Tech has its largest lead of the game - 12 points- leading 47-35 with 15:43 in the half
  • Rodgers hits a jumper for the Hoyas but Wallace answers with one of her own - 50-38 Yellow Jackets with 13:53 to play
  • Rodgers connects on  a three-point shot and and GT can't convert, so Rodger tries for another three - but misses
  • Georgia Tech turns the ball over in trying to bring the ball upcourt too quickly but the Hoyas can't convert
  • Georgetown ball as they are trying to take advantage of GT slight lapse 
  • That is short-lived as Bennett intercepts a Hoyas pass at mid-court and scores on the ensuing drive to the basket - Yellow Jackets lead 52-41 with 11:56 to go
  • Hoyas zone still not working as Goodlett gets a pass inside and lays it in and is fouled - misses on the extra shot
  • Reese and Gortnar get tied up after a Hoyas basket - both walk away but there is some real intense going on in the paint
  • Goodlett doubled inside and gets the shot away which doesn't fall and is fouled - shooting 1-and-1 - she drops the first and misses the second
  • Hoyas come down but Gortnar denies Moore a shot and the Yellow Jackets come and Goodlett scores - 57-43 with 9:15 to go
  • Georgetown gets a big three-pointer from Morgan Williams
  • Walthour drives back upcourt being fouled - drops both shot to extend Yellow Jackets lead to 13 points - 59-46 with 8:23 to go 
  • Hoyas score with Wilson and Rodger underneath and GT comes up with Marshall trying to score but she is denied by Wilson who turns it over
  • Wallace hits another three for Georgia Tech and Rodgers scores a layup - Georgia Tech leads 62-50 with 6:51 to play
  • Hoyas are missing easy layups under the basket that could be costly by game's end
  • Rodgers is fouled and scored two to cut into GT lead 
  • The Yellow Jackets break the Hoyas press and move the ball around the perimeter and work it inside as Regins scores two
  • Alexa Roche scores a baseline jumper for Georgetown and that is match with another layup from GT's Regins - still a 12-point differential - 66-54 with 5:02 to play
  • Georgia Tech moves the ball around before Georgetown cause the to turn it over
  • On their ensuing possession the Hoyas can't drop their shot attempts and Georgia Tech comes the other way 
  • Walthour hits a three-pointer for Georgia Tech and extends the lead to 15 points - the largest of the game - 69-54 with 3:45 to go
  • The Hoyas score two with Rodgers at the FT  line and Georgia Tech matches that with two FT's from Maye
  • The Hoyas' Crawford is fouled hard and shoots two and makes them both
  • On the ensuing possession Georgia Tech turns the ball over and Magee drives the basket and is fouled - she scores one - Yellow Jackets lead 71-59 with 2:52 left in the half
  • The chess match and battle inside the paint is on - GT can't get the rebound and as the Hoyas inbound they foul Goodlett and send her to the line for two shot - she misses both and GT is called for a travel on the rebound
  • Georgetown has the ball and attempts a long three and another as Georgia Tech rebounds and brings the ball upcourt with Maye driving the lane - she is fouled and will shoot two at the FT line
  • Maye makes one of two 
  • On the ensuing possession Georgetown turns it over and Regins scores for the Yellow Jackets - now leading 74-60 with 1:48 to play
  • Big battle at mid-court on every possession with both teams trapping - Georgetown  at the line and Williams scores one of two 
  • On the rebound, Georgia Tech gets possession and Walthour goes to the line for two - she scores both and the Yellow Jackets lead is back to 15 points - 76-61 with 1:22 to play
  • Yellow Jackets have trouble moving the ball out of their end and call timeout
  • Maye brings it up but misses a layup and Goodlett misses the put-back
  • Hoyas' Rodgers drops a baseline three-pointer and the GT lead is at 12 points - 76-64 with 47.3 seconds to go
  • Yellow Jackets break Hoyas press and bring it upcourt - burn clock time by passing the ball - Wallace tries one last three-pointer but misses
  • The Hoyas can't score and that's it - the Yellow Jackets are headed to the NCAA Sweet 16
