#5 Duke Blue Devils paralyze Clemson Tigers in 81-37 win

The #5 Duke Blue Devils (17-2, 8-0) ramped up their defense during the second half and executed a solid shooting performance throughout to down the Clemson Lady Tigers, 81-37, in Littlejohn Coliseum  in Clemson, S.C. on Friday night.

Duke paralyzed Clemson by holding them to zero field goals in the final 13:08 while hitting 52.3 percent of their field goals in extending their ACC record to 8-0.

Tricia Liston shot a team-high 16 points while freshman Elizabeth Williams totaled 14 points, five rebounds and five blocked shots.

Williams is now the all-time single-season freshman leader at Duke with 73 blocks.

• Won its 15th straight game against Clemson and seven in a row playing in Littlejohn Coliseum

ACC WBB action: #5 Duke travels to take on Clemson

The #5 Duke Blue Devils (16-2, 7-0 ACC) travel to take on the Clemson Tigers (5-12, 1-5) at Littlejohn Coliseum in Clemson, S.C. on Friday.

Duke is riding a 10-game winning streak on the season and has won 10-straight ACC contests dating back to last year.

Duke and Clemson will meet for the 66th time in school history with Duke holding a slight advantage in the series, 33-32.  

In games played in Clemson, Duke has won six in a row.

The Lady Tigers defeated Duke, 93-75, at Clemson in 2000-01, which was the last time Clemson has knocked off the Blue Devils. 

Duke

• Duke ranks first in the ACC with a 35.0 three-point field goal percentage
• Nine different Blue Devils have registered double-figure scoring so far on the season
• Richa Jackson leads the ACC with a 64.9 field goal percentage in ACC games only, while ranking third overall (54.3%)
• Chelsea Gray’s 6.2 assists per game ranks No. 1 in the ACC
• Elizabeth Williams is third in rebounds (8.9) and is averaging 4.7 blocks per game which leads the ACC

Clemson

• Clemson enters Friday’s game following a 94-65 road loss to Wake Forest last Sunday

Chelsea Gray Named the Ronald McDonald House Charities Duke Student-Athlete of the Week

Earlier in the week, Blue Devils sophomore guard Chelsea Gray was named the Ronald McDonald House Charities Duke Student-Athlete of the Week, after helping to lead the team to victories over Georgia Tech and #8 Maryland during the previous week.

The #5 Blue Devils posted an 80-72 victory over Maryland on Sunday to improve to 7-0 in league action and 16-2 overall.  

Duke also traveled to Georgia Tech and registered a key 79-62 road win over the Yellow Jackets on Wednesday. 

Gray averaged 16.5 points, 7.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds in last week’s action.  

She closed the weekend with her third double-double of the season as the 5'11" point guard scored a season-high 17 points and dished 11 assists against the Terrapins. 

Gray also pulled down five rebounds and had one steal in 36 minutes of play.

She scored seven points over the final 2:56 of the contest to help seal the 80-72 victory for Duke, which won its school-record 34th straight overall game in Cameron and 26th consecutive ACC home contest. 

In a key road contest at Georgia Tech, Gray totaled a then season-high 16 points, four assists, four rebounds and two steals.  

Gray hit 2-of-4 treys and 5-of-6 free throws on the week, while posting a 15-5 assist-to-turnover ratio.  

Gray has notched three games this season with 10 or more assists.

ACC WBB postgame: #5 Duke beats #8 Maryland 80-72

 The #5 Duke Blue Devils (16-2, 7-0) continued to show their perfection in ACC women's basketball with an 80-72 win over the #8 Maryland Terrapins (18-2, 5-2)  in front of 7,228 witnesses at historic Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C. on Sunday afternoon.

The Blue Devils' undefeated record in conference play leaves them sitting firmly atop the standings approaching the mid-point of the ACC schedule.

In addition to Duke and Maryland, the ACC currently has two other teams in the AP Top 25, the #11 Miami Hurricanes and the #24 North Carolina Tar Heels.

ACC WBB action: #5 Duke Blue Devils vs #8 Maryland Terrapins

Right from the opening tip-off Maryland started the scoring off and Duke responded just as quickly.

1st Half

The Terps took a 7-2 lead after the first minute and a half of play until Duke got it's game together under the leadership of guard Chelsea Gray and Haley Peters.

Throughout the first half, both teams traded baskets and lead changes.

After the end of the first half, the Blue Devils led the Terrapins 44-43.

Maryland - Top scorers after the half: Tianna Hawkins (15 pts), Alyssa Thomas (14 pts).

2nd Half

After impressive shooting performances coming from both teams (Duke 50.0%, Maryland 54.5%) during the first half, the tempo adjusted in terms of the defensive pressure during the start of the second half.

Duke took advantage of Maryland's poor shooting performance to start the half and led 48-45, and continued to win the rebound battle under the board.s 

The Blue Devils went on an 8-0 run to extend their lead to 56-45 with 13:27 remaining.

Maryland then went on a 7-0 run of their own to cut the Duke lead to 61-54.

Alyssa Thomas was the force that Maryland needed to keep them close to the Blue Devils as she hit short jumpers, lay-ups and three-pointers.

Possessing only a three-point lead with 6:57 remaining in the half, Duke had to regroup in order to maintain their stranglehold on the lead during a time out.

Richa Jacskon had scored four straight points to keep Duke ahead while the Terps continued to come back at the time.

The x-factor in the game for the Blue Devils was Haley Peters whose hot hand extended the Duke lead to 71-64 at the five-minute mark.

With Duke ahead 71-66 with under four minutes to play, key turnovers by Jackson and Williams allowed Duke to possess the ball and take their time on offense.

With just under three minutes to play, Gray hit a three-pointer that released a thunderous roar from the crowd and put the Blue Devils ahead 74-68.

However, Maryland's Lynetta Kizer answered back and narrowed the lead to 74-70 with 2:36 remaining.

Gray continued to keep the Terps at bay as her short jumper with 1:04 remaining in the half kept the Blue Devils at six-points.

Maryland's ensuing possession came up empty as Duke got more opportunities at the free throw line.

With every attempt to catch up to Duke that the Terrapins made, the Blue Devils ensured that their free-throw shooting would help them to keep the lead beyond six points.

By the end of it all, Duke won its 34th consecutive game at Cameron Indoor Stadium and extended their perfect 7-0 record in ACC play to date by beating Maryland 80-72.

ACC WBB action: Triangle hosts rivalry and top 10 action

Women's basketball fans in the Triangle-area from Raleigh to Durham are busy on Sunday as Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play highlights rivalry and top 10 play along Tobacco Road.

The NC State Wolfpack tipped off against the #24 North Carolina Tar Heels at historic Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C. at 1 p.m. while the #3 Duke Blue Devils will face the #7 Maryland Terrapins at historic Cameron Indoor Stadium at 3:30 p.m.

#5 Blue Devils to host #8 Terrapins in ACC action

The #5 Duke Blue Devils women’s basketball team (15-2, 6-0 ACC) will host the #8 Maryland Terrapins (18-1, 5-1) on Sunday in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

 

Duke has gone three days without playing a game, after playing three contests in six days.

The Blue Devils are riding a nine-game winning streak since falling at 10th-ranked Kentucky on Dec. 8 and are currently on a 33-game winning streak in Cameron Indoor Stadium in addition to holding a 25-game winning streak versus ACC opponents in Cameron.
 

 

Jackson, Williams Lead No. 5 Duke Past Georgia Tech, 79-62

Freshman Elizabeth Williams notched a double-double and sophomore Richa Jackson scored 17 points to lead fifth-ranked Duke to a 79-62 victory at Georgia Tech last Wednesday in Duluth, Ga.

Williams totaled her fourth double-double of the year with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while blocking five shots.
 

Duke won its 34th straight game against Georgia Tech and improved to 15-2 overall and 6-0 in league action.
