Triangle Sports Roundup: Sticks, pucks and balls

Carolina Hurricanes forward Jeff Skinner scores in shootout against New York Islanders - Peter Koutroumpis, PKS Consulting LLC

The Carolina Hurricanes' season nears an end as the team has two games remaining in completing a disappointing lockout-shortened 2012-2013 campaign that held much promise early on.

The Hurricanes' recent two-game win streak shows some signs of hope for next season, but the latter half of their 48-game season was marred with injuries and inconsistent play that left this young team floundering and emotionally fragile during the months of March and April.
While the 'fastest game on ice' comes to an end in the Triangle, there is a lot of excitement in Chapel Hill, N.C. as the 'fastest game on two feet' takes center stage as the ACC Men's and Women's Lacrosse Championships begin on Thursday and run through Sunday at Fetzer Field and Kenan Stadium.

All four North Carolina Tar Heels and Duke Blue Devils lacrosse teams are currently ranked in the top 10 of each of the NIKE/Inside Lacrosse, USILA Coaches, and deBeer Lacrosse polls.
Thus, the action and intensity still remains high with sticks swinging in different directions around the Triangle, but just from one surface to the other.

Duke women's hoops wins and loses at same time

Duke Blue Devils guard Chelsea Gray scored her 1000th point recently - Orin Day, DWHoops.com

Just as things were right on track, the fifth-ranked Duke Blue Devils train hit a major nick in the rails on Sunday.

After winning their their 37th straight ACC home contest to improve to 24-1 overall and 14-0 in league action with an 81-70 win over the the Demon Deacons at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C., they lost guard Chelsea Gray for the remainder of the season with a dislocated knee.

After being recognized for scoring her 1000th point in a Blue Devils uniform before the game, the junior from Manteca, Calif. jumped for a rebound at the 8:01 mark of the first half and landed awkwardly while contesting for the ball with a Deamon Deacons player.

She managed to walk off the floor on crutches and sat on the team bench with her knee and leg immobilized in a brace for the remainder of the game while watching her team win its ACC-leading 37th consecutive game over a league opponent at home in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Coincidentally, the location of Gray's injury was only five to eight feet away from the spot where teammate Rich Jackson suffered a season-ending injury a year earlier against the Virginia Tech Hokies, during the teams' annual Pink Play4Kay game as well.

A truly tough loss for the Blue Devils and a painful and unfortunate injury to one of the best point guards in the country.
